Research

My primary research interests are in second language acquisition, bilingualism, indigenous languages of Latin America and applied linguistics. On a more theoretical side, I am interested in symbolic representations of interlanguage and bilingual grammars, especially at the morphosyntactic level. Considering the more applied side of my work, I am very interested in bilinguals and their minority languages. I have been working in Latin America to support educational projects with indigenous languages. I coordinated the pedagogical aspects of the two projects, one in Brazil and one in Mexico, to prepare pedagogical grammars in different indigenous languages. I am also interested in Portuguese and Spanish as heritage languages in the US. Although my primary focus is on morphosyntactic representations, I like to read studies by colleagues who look into issues of language identity, displacement, migration and sociolinguistic variation.
